 Nurse Refresher Program

Does this sound like you?

  • A registered nurse out of work for 5 or more years.
  • A registered nurse who has a lapsed license from NC or other states.
  • A registered nurse that is ready to return to the exciting, dynamic field of nursing.
  • A registered nurse that has been busy raising a family, and is now ready to return to nursing.
  • A registered nurse that needs a flexible program that can fit into life requirements.

If any of these statements fit your current situation, the AHEC RN Refresher program is for YOU!!

Course study

The course consists of a 23-module, self-directed study through the Continuing Education, Independent Studies at UNC-CH. The modules focus on medical/surgical concepts as mandated by the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NC BON). At the end of each module there is an examination. Once completed, you return it to Independent studies at UNC-CH. You may advance through the program at your own pace.

Clinical practicum

The clinical practicum is 160 hours of direct patient care with an RN preceptor. The RN Refresher Coordinator will pair you with an experienced nurse who will be your preceptor throughout your clinical. The experience provides you with an up-front view of the acute care setting.

How do you enroll?

Contact Laura Patterson (laura.patterson@seahec.net) 910-792-5560, ext. 105, Project Specialist with the RN Refresher Program, to obtain an information packet by mail. You will be given dates to attend an Orientation Class where you will meet with the SEAHEC RN Refresher Program Coordinator, who will answer your questions.

This is an exciting time in nursing. There are endless possibilities to practice nursing in today’s world of advanced technology and practice. Many nurses have completed this Refresher course and are now taking advantage of the personal and professional development that they were seeking when they first considered coming back to nursing. Join them and reach your goals in life.

How long does this take?

The program allows you up to 9 months to complete the 23-modules of self-directed study. The 160-hour precepted practicum must be started within one year completion of the self-directed study, and completed within six months.
